Connected But Alone- A response to Sherry Turkle

In the Ted Talk “Connected but Alone”, Sherry Turkle discusses the many ways digital communication has impacted us as a society. Turkle expresses her concern that many people have issues leaving their phones, and as a result risk isolating themselves even further. While Turkle makes a compelling argument, I do think she fails to acknowledge that texting and social media might be a different form of communication, rather than one that replaces human interaction. Certainly there is evidence of reduced attention spans and I agree that making certain spaces and times phone free is a good practice, however I wonder if for some, interactions have become easier due to technology. After all, it is because of technology that our communities can transcend space and time.

  1. Yeah, an appealing aspect of the internet and social media is that people of specific hobbies or interests can find each other. This can actually resolve the feeling of being isolated or lonely in one aspect of your life.
